Inspired by the poetry of Bahrain-born Hameed Al Qaed, “Memories in Sand”
is a body of multimedia artworks created by artist Anna Leanda
Thackray.

In which these two different forms of expression blend together to
create a unique synergy of art and words, or as Hameed describes it, a third
form of expression “with its own secret music”.
“As soon as I read Hameed’s poetry, and particularly ‘Hoora’, I
understood what the poet was saying; there was no need for interpretation,”
says Anna. “He eloquently wove his memories in my mind’s eye and I
responded by constructing a multilayered collage in which his reflections unite
with my own habituated memories and the feelings his poetry evoked.” The
poem that evoked her strongest reaction reflects on the place of the poet’s
birth, Hoora, which was once on the seashore but due to land reclamation in
the course of Bahrain’s rapid development and expansion, “now lies buried in
coffins of sand”. ~ Melissa van Maasdyk
